Wild Animals: Smooth Snake
If you think you have to go on safari to see some cool wild animals, then think again! We’ve tracked down some fascinating wild animals - and they can all be found living in the UK!
Smooth snake
The third type of snake living in the UK is the smooth snake. They're exceptionally rare, with a population of only around 3,500. Smooth snakes are often mistaken for adders, but they don't have the same zigzag pattern. They're quite aggressive and eat other reptiles (even other snakes), spiders and sometimes small mammals such as mice and voles. Smooth snakes are constrictors - which means they kill their prey by wrapping their body around it and squeezing it. They live in hedgerows, embankments and woodlands.
Where could I spot one?
The South of England, such as Dorset, Hampshire and Surrey, in warm sunny spots. Remember, smooth snakes are incredibly rare, so you'll be very lucky if you do spot one.
