Wild Animals: Polecat

Polecat

If you think you have to go on safari to see some cool wild animals, then think again! We’ve tracked down some fascinating wild animals - and they can all be found living in the UK!

Polecat
A polecat is similar to a weasel, but they're bigger, growing to between 40 and 50cm in length. They have dark fur, which is paler around their faces. When a polecat is frightened it can give off a musky unpleasant smell. Polecats like to eat frogs, fish, rabbits, snakes and birds. Although they used to be found all over Britain up until about 80 years ago, they were thought of as a pest and many were killed. So now they are quite rare. Polecats are related to the domestic ferret.

Where could I spot one?
The best places to spot polecats are rural areas in Wales, Herefordshire and the Midlands. Some polecats have been spotted in the South and Southeast of England.
