Wild Animals: Grass Snake
If you think you have to go on safari to see some cool wild animals, then think again! We’ve tracked down some fascinating wild animals - and they can all be found living in the UK!
Grass snake
The grass snake is Britain's largest snake and can easily grow to more than a metre in length! They survive the cold British winters by hibernating from October, to around March or April. Grass snakes love water and can often be found around ponds, lake or rivers - basically near places that their favourite foods, frogs and toads live. They're very good at swimming and sometimes even eat fish. Grass snakes are not venomous. You can identify one by its distinctive yellow collar marking.
Where could I spot one?
You're most likely to spot a grass snake near water in the South of England. The warmer the day, the more likely you are to see one.
