Wild Animals: Adder

Adder

If you think you have to go on safari to see some cool wild animals, then think again! We’ve tracked down some fascinating wild animals - and they can all be found living in the UK!

Adder
Did you know there are three types of snake found living wild in the UK? Adders are Britain's only venomous (poisonous) reptile and they hibernate (sleep) to avoid the cold winters. They grow to about 55cm in length and eat baby birds, frogs and small mammals such as mice and voles. Adders live in a number of different habitats such as woods, sand dunes and railway embankments. Although they are venomous, they're not aggressive and will only attack if they are frightened, for example if they get picked up. Most reactions to adder bites are mild, but if you do get bitten you should take it seriously and to a hospital straight away. In the last 100 years, 12 people in Britain have been killed by adder bites, less than have been killed due to insect stings!

Where could I spot one?
Adders live all across Britain, especially the south. If you do spot an adder, you can record it on this adder website.
