Tarantula
They might scare some people, but spiders can make really interesting pets. The tarantula is big enough to have a bit of personality, plus it's cute and furry! Beginners should start with a Pink Toed tarantula. They're fairly placid and can be handled if you learn to be very gentle. They need a well-ventilated cage, some water to drink and a supply of moths and other large insects to eat.
