Myleene Klass interview

Myleene Klass

Myleene Klass hit the headlines as one part of pop sensation Hear'Say but she's a classically trained musician and now a DJ as well! Read our interview with the lady of may talents.

In between working her day and night jobs as a DJ for ClassicFM and Capital Radio, AOL Kids caught up with the lovely Myleene, who's not only working those jobs but also handling a new baby and planning a new album - phew!

What was your first instrument?
I learned the piano, violin and harp. I got quickly obsessed with music and stayed with the piano. The harp is a wonderful sound but can be like riding a bicycle.

What's your musical background?
I have six generations of musicians in my family but there was no pressure to become a musician, they just encouraged me to follow my love for music. I studied the piano predominantly - I was student at the Guildhall. I have always loved all types of music though both pop and classical, both are about telling stories and interpreting. Some people say that if you're a classical musician you should spurn other forms of music but I won't. I have a breakfast show on Classic FM and then in the evening I do a pop show on Capital Radio, you can enjoy both sets of music.

Did you keep your hand in with classical during Hear'Say?
Yes, I still played classical piano classical and that time opened many doors for me - performing for the British troops in Afghanistan; and playing the Royal Albert Hall to name a couple.

Do you enjoy being a DJ?
It's brilliant fun - I love communicating, it's the same as being a musician in that way. Every word you say counts. And I keep learning, doing one show helps me to do the other. For example, Barbie is associated with many modern things, but she's associated with classical music too now [Barbie at the Symphony will tour the UK in December]. Pop has stolen many things from classical, the links between them are strong if sometimes not immediately obvious.

With a new baby, you must be so busy!
Oh yes, I still learning to balance it all out - my baby, my work and I want to live my live to the full. I want to enjoy everything, don't want to be say I'm too tired to do something.

What advice would you give youngsters on getting into music?
Play pieces that you like, find a teacher you like, after all it's not meant to be torture. It's about fun and it's about communicating. Don't let yourself be forced to do something you're not enjoying. It's always good to be learning a piece that relates to everyday life - for example don't just play scales but find piece that contain scales, like the Eastenders theme music - plenty of scale practice in that one! And play in front of people. You don't have to do it alone, you could join an orchestra or a choir, both are great fun, and you learn to work as a team. Going from nothing to playing a piece as group is such great fun.

Do you have to learn to read music?
It's not vital - look at Sir Paul McCartney. A good ear is most important.

So, Myleene, what's next?
Ha ha, learning to be a mummy, I've a new album out early next year, so practising for that as I'll be recording a few weeks time and some modelling for M&S - loads and loads!

You've achieved so much already, any unfulfilled dreams?
I like to be astronaut - aim high!

You can listen to Myleene on Classic FM on Saturday and Sunday mornings and Capital FM on Sunday evenings!
